Home is where heart is for happy couple

They say it's never too late to make the most of life and pensioners James Fleming and Sue Jones, who are preparing to marry after meeting at the sheltered housing scheme where they live, are perfect proof.

The happy couple are to tie the knot after meeting when they moved into Broadway Gardens in Bushbury, Wolverhampton. Sue, 63, who used to live in Finchfield, moved into a flat there in October last year followed in January by James, 81, who used to live in Bilston. Within a couple of weeks the pair had met and they soon realised they were meant to be together.

Now Broadway Gardens is getting a wedding licence so the couple can marry at the home where they first laid eyes on each other.

Sue, who has a son Alexander, 30, a daughter Katherine, 28 and a grandson Joshua, three today, said: "I heard through the grapevine he wanted my phone number and that he wanted to get to know me. He has a lovely smile and a good sense of humour. He is also very good company."

James, a father of three with four grandchildren and one great-grandchild, said: "She has a very good nature, she is just a nice person and she also has a lovely smile."

It was James who proposed and he revealed Sue turned him down twice before he told her that she would have to ask him – something she promptly did.

The £1,000 licence for the venue has just come through via the Extra Care Charitable Trust, which runs the site on Broadway. The couple plan a private ceremony followed by a celebration with friends.

They decided to hold the ceremony at Broadway Gardens because they both enjoy it there so much. "It is a brilliant place here, I enjoy everything, the standard of care, the food, the accommodation, everything is just right," he added.

Sue who used to be a carer in a residential home, said the housing scheme had activities on six and a half days a week, so " your brain is active pretty much all the time."

And while they are busy planning their big day they have got a message for those at a certain age. "It is never too late – people should never give up," they beamed.
