Carillion could axe 80 jobs

Up to 80 IT workers could lose their jobs at Wolverhampton-based construction group Carillion after it transferred their work to an outside contractor.

Around 150 people work for Carillion's internal IT services department, 95 of them at offices in Pendeford.

Only around 70 of them will have a job when the work is taken over by Accenture later this year.

Accenture already handles a range of finance and human resources operations for Carillion. In both cases it took over the running of office operations based in Wolverhampton.

The £5billion construction and building services giant, which employs around 50,000 people worldwide, currently has around 800 people based at its headquarters offices in the city.

It is not clear at this stage where Accenture will base the work of Carillion's IT department, or how many of the 95 Wolverhampton staff will keep their jobs, but the transfer of the work is due to be completed by September this year.

Accenture employs around 180,000 people around the world, taking on administration and IT work for a range of companies.

A former Carillion worker, who refused to be named, said: "The ball really started rolling in June and it has been kept very quiet and done bit by bit.

"I left and got another job when I found out what was happening, because I can't afford to be out of work.

"A lot of of the workers are really going to struggle because of this. Some of them have worked for Carillion for a number of years, so I don't know what they are going to do."

The transfer to Accenture came alongside Carillion's £36 million sale of its external Carillion IT Services (CITS) business to Capita in June.

Carillion had acquired the business, which employed 440 people, last year as part of its takeover of Alfred McAlpine.

Capita claimed today that no redundancies were made as a result of its takeover of CITS.
