Bewdley is to get a weekly market in a new location approved by people in the riverside town.

The Saturday market will return for good following the success of two trials in Severn Side South.

Councillors are due to give final approval at a meeting on July 21.

Markets have been held on land behind the George Hotel and at Dog Lane previously but because these were not clearly seen by visitors they failed to attract as many customers as expected.

Market operators applied to the council to relocate it to the Severn Side South location on the upper part of the quayside.

The riverside site is thought to be a better location for attracting both local shoppers and tourists.

But before giving final approval councillors decided to ask local people what they thought to the plans after a trial market held on the site attracted complaints of noise and nuisance.

Some people claimed the generators needed to power the market were too noisy and stallholders struggled to get passing trade.

But talks have been held to solve the problems involving the generators and councillors are set to give formal consent to the new market.

A regular weekly market will now be held on Saturdays with permission granted initially for a 12-month period.
