Three police officers were injured when a getaway car fleeing the scene of a burglary in Burntwood crashed into their car.

The raiders had broken into the Co-op store in Morley Road by forcing shutters and the front door.

They then used tools to break into a cash machine.

As the offenders were making off in a silver Audi estate it collided with the police car after the raid on Friday night.

The three male officers were taken to hospital.

Two were released after treatment for whiplash injuries, but the third remained in hospital over night with arm, rib and stomach injuries but was allowed home later on Saturday.

A man was arrested at the scene, but it is believed there were two other offenders in the Audi which was abandoned.

A member of staff at the Co-op Store told the Express & Star: "They forced the shutters and smashed the front door to get inside and then attacked the cash machine from behind, inside the store."

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident, or has any information that could help with the inquiry, to contact Tamworth CID on 01785 234961, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
