A West Midlands police officer suffered burns to one of his legs when an explosive device went off accidentally during a war game at a site in Staffordshire.

Pc Stephen Maymand, aged 35, of Willenhall, was flown by air ambulance to hospital after the incident at Project Paintball in Dunston near Penkridge at 3pm yesterday.

He was also treated at the scene for cuts to his leg before being flown to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire in Stoke-on-Trent. Project paintball owner Richard Tomkinson said that the injury had happened during an airsoft game organised by Cannock business JD Airsoft, of Exchange Industrial estate, Cross Street.

JD Airsoft owner Phil Corns said that Pc Maymand had been acting as a marshal. "He was setting up an electronic pyrotechnic device when it went off," he said.
