Councillor Mike Maryon said potholes were giving a bad impression to visitors to the county.

He made the announcement as part of his first speech as the new portfolio holder for highways and environment at the first full council meeting held yesterday following this month's election.

He said: "The first impression of any visitor to Staffordshire is of places like Cannock Chase, the Moorlands and the other areas of beauty that are in the region. However, that first impression of the beautiful environment of Staffordshire for visitors changes when they drive over their first pothole."

The first meeting of the county council after the landslide election result in favour of the Tories this month also saw Philip Atkins formally take up his new role as leader.

Councillor Atkins also formally unveiled his Cabinet, including deputy leader Ian Parry, from Stone, who will also be cabinet lead member for children and young people.

Rex Roberts was appointed as the new chairman. Erica Bayliss was appointed vice-chairman.
