Families in Dudley can now recycle their old Yellow Page directories by using the council's black box collection service.

New directories are set to be delivered to homes across the borough over the next few week.

The council said the high amount of yellow ink used in previous editions of Yellow Pages meant that they could not be recycled. But due to changes in the way they are made they can now be recycled through the black box service.

It coincides with the start of the Yellow Woods Challenge a campaign for schools run by Yellow Pages in partnership with the Woodland Trust and Dudley Council. It encourages schools to collect covers of the old directories as evidence that they have been recycled during June and July.

There are 48 schools taking part in the challenge and those collecting the most covers will be rewarded with cash prizes, with £300 for first place, £200 for second and £100 for third.

Last year, the Brier School in Kingswinford scooped the 'Gold Oak' award and a prize of £300 for recycling more than seven directories per pupil – the highest amount in the borough. For every pound awarded to schools Yell will give the same amount to the Woodland Trust – the UK's leading woodland conservation charity.

There is also a contest, which invites children to create their own artwork from the front covers of Yellow Pages, which will also encourage creative thinking about recycling with a prize of £100 up for grabs for the winning school.
