A primary school beat nearly 80 schools to regain their title of Big Spring Clean Recycling Champions.

Glebefields Primary School, Tipton, which won the award in the 2008 campaign for collecting the most recycled litter, scooped the accolade again this year after collecting 16 bags full of cans and glass from the public walkways around the Sandgate Road Estate.

Environmental business giant Biffa awarded the school with a second composter worth £300 as a prize.

Head Colin Dewis said: "Our pupils thoroughly enjoy taking part every year and to be named double award winners is such a fantastic achievement for us.

"As a school we make a conservative effort every day to do our bit and help shape our local environment."

Brian Green, waste operations manager from sponsors Biffa, added the pupils efforts in the competition were outstanding.

More than 5,000 people have taken part in The Big Spring Clean 2009 campaign, including 80 Sandwell schools.
