Lidl finally opens for business

Lidl has finally opened its latest budget shop in Wolverhampton - six months late after being dogged by controversy.

Around 100 customers were queuing before the doors opened at 8am.

First in the queue was 73-year-old Lawrence Davies, who arrived an hour early.

He said: "I wanted to beat the queue. I've lived here since 1957 and we have needed our own supermarket for years."

Grandmother Iris Whitehouse, aged 78, of Brantley Avenue, said: "I'm delighted because the prices here are better than other shops in the area, which are just too expensive for pensioners who have to watch the penny."

The development, on the site of the former Castlecroft Garage, hit a planning wrangle after it was built 24 inches too high in parts.
