Mr Martin will formally step down on Sunday June 21. The House of Commons will select a new speaker the following day.
He becomes the first person to be forced from the post in more than 300 years.
Mr Martin's dramatic departure comes 24 hours after he was humiliated by a string of MPs calling in the Commons for him to quit.
He said he was stepping down "in order that unity can be maintained" in the Commons.
