Severn Valley Railway has won a major civil engineering award for restoration work following flooding which washed away vast sections of the track.

The speedy rescue plan put in place to reconstruct the popular heritage steam railway has won the Special Award for Community Benefit at this year's annual awards of the Institution of Civil Engineers in the West Midlands.

The line alongside the River Severn was partly closed by major landslips following severe summer storms in June and July 2007.

This had a major impact on the local economy and a team, led by David Symonds Associates, worked quickly to reconstruct the track.

They had to address significant geological issues because of the landslip but the project to reopen the 12 miles of track was completed in nine months.

The award ceremony took place at the Think Tank at MIllennium Point in Birmingham and was hosted by broadcaster and columnist Prof Carl Chinn.
