Paddling pool pledge

It has been one of Wolverhampton's most popular summertime venues for three-quarters of a century – and today a city chief said it would be here for years to come.

The popular paddling pool in Upper Green, Tettenhall, is due to re-open later this month – ready to cool people in what weather experts are predicting will be a long scorching summer.

Wolverhampton City Council's park rangers have been busy preparing the pool so that members of the public will be able to take a dip from May 23 onwards.

Now councillor Wendy Thompson, cabinet member for resources, governance and support services, says the pool will continue to be a priority, despite other services falling victim to budget cuts.

"The paddling pool is a very popular facility and would never be under threat from cuts," she said.

"Hundreds of people use it, particularly on warm days, and it's lovely to see families enjoying themselves beside the water."

But she added: "The only downside is the occasional bout of anti-social behaviour, with people drinking round the pool, which is why we introduced an alcohol ban there.

"There is also the problem of litter. It's nice that people enjoy it but it's important that people also look after it."

The Met Office says Britain could be in line for a long, hot summer, with temperatures likely to be above average across the UK from June to August.

Senior ranger Allan Wassall said: "Tettenhall Pool is really popular with members of the public and we are delighted that it will be open throughout the summer period."

Staff from the city council and Severn Trent Water are working hard to get Tettenhall Pool ready.
