Little Treasures Day Nursery based at St Michael's First School, in Market Place, Penkridge, received an "outstanding" grade following a recent inspection.

Inspector Patricia Webb said: "Such exceptional practice enables children to make impressive progress in their learning and development given their individual starting points, abilities and interests.

"Children are confident and enthusiastic learners in an environment that encourages their exploratory nature and promotes their ability to develop critical thinking skills, for example, they delighted in playing outdoors in the snow, bringing the snow inside to examine its properties as they wonder at the melting that happens."

She praised the nursery staff's ability to use every opportunity to promote learning, such as the breakfast session where staff encourage the children to use maths by considering how a slice of toast can be split into different parts and shapes.

She added: "The setting is truly inclusive in its approach, celebrating each child's uniqueness. Children's self-esteem is very effectively fostered as they enjoy well-deserved praise for their actions and contributions."

The nursery opened at the school in September and has another site at Boscomoor Lane for younger children. Nursery manager Karen Turner said having the nursery at the school allowed for an easier transition from the nursery into the reception class at the school when they reach the age of five.

She said: "I am so proud of my staff and the children who have worked extremely hard to make the nursery such a great success.

"The inspector said that we have done so well and as soon as you walk in you can feel how friendly and happy it is here. We try and make it, as much as possible, a nurturing place and an educational place and as nice an environment as we possibly can." To enquirie for nursery places call 01785 711025.
