Messing about on the river

Hundreds of people boarded their own homemade rafts to race down the River Severn in aid of charity.

The Kidderminster and District Lions club held their annual raft race from Arley to Stourport yesterday.

Around 42 rafts in three categories took to the water, with 292 people grabbing the oars to help paddle downstream during the event which is now in its 29th year.

The super rafts category saw vessels with up to 10 people on board rush down river, with other smaller rafts taking part in the works and companies section. But it was the club, pub and social category that saw the most leisurely day out, stopping off at watering holes along the way.

Event organiser Ron Cross said the event has proved popular, raising money for the Midland Air Ambulance and other smaller charities.

Some competitors donned fancy dress, and there was good-natured banter from spectators, some of whom hurled eggs and flour from the bridge at Arley onto friends taking part.
