A police officer suffered serious injuries in a hit-and-run after being knocked down by a car he and a colleague had stopped moments earlier.

The officer, a 30-year-old based at Stourbridge police station, is in a serious but stable condition in hospital after the collision in Sandyacre Way at 1.40am today.

He suffered severe injuries but they are not believed to be life-threatening. Police had been called to reports of people acting suspicously near Hammond Way, in Stourbridge, in the early hours of the morning.

They saw a silver Suburu, registration P482 CFH, drive into nearby Sandyacre Way. Blocking the road with their car, one officer got out to speak to the occupants.

But as he did so the silver car sped away hitting the officer. It then left the scene without stopping.

Today the scene was sealed off for investigations.

Officers are appealing for help in tracing the car and its occupants, described as four men wearing balaclavas and scarves.
