Vandals have gone on a wrecking spree around a Tipton nature reserve, setting about brick walls with hammers and starting fires.

The Friends of Sheepwash Nature Reserve have just spent £120,000 improving the area, and there is £500,000 more to spend doing it up.

But the young thugs wreaked havoc in a night of attacks and residents say they are disgusted. Fred Perry, of Horton Road, Great Bridge discovered the devastation yesterday. He said: "They've done a lot of damage, I feel so annoyed. They have wrecked the brick wall and set all these fires on the grass. They've even broken the gates that were put up to keep motorbikes out."

The Friends group, and local organisation Swan Watch, teamed up to apply for cash from the National Lottery, and electricity provider Central Networks also splashed out £120,000 on providing new pathways.

The work had not long been completed when the hammer wielding gang struck on Wednesday night.
