Blackspot bridge strikes again
This was the scene this afternoon after a lorry got stuck under a notorious tram bridge.
Emergency services were called to the bridge in Great Bridge Road on the border between Tipton and Bilston just before 10.50am today.
Firefighters said the lorry contained "non-hazardous" food and was in a "precarious position".
Police were working to recover the vehicle while firefighters from Wednesbury and Tipton worked to make it safe.
West Midlands Fire Service spokesman Mike Fox said: "The call came in of an articulated lorry that had become struck under the Metro bridge and overturned. We had two crews in attendance with 10 firefighters.
"A recovery vehicle has been called."
A vehicle became stuck at the bridge in March.It is believed the driver of that lorry, from Stalkers Transport Services Ltd in Cumbria, had been following his sat nav route instructions and misjudged the height of the bridge.
Midland Metro bosses were forced to slow down trams after the lorry got trapped, but insisted services were only delayed for a "couple of minutes".
The location has been the scene of 20 similar accidents since 2003, causing chaos on the main Great Bridge Road route.
The bridge is owned by Travel Midland Metro.
Signs were put up on the approach to the bridge four years ago and were funded by Sandwell Council. Travel Midland Metro spokeswoman Carly O'Donnell said drivers of lorries needed to know the sizes of their vehicles and should read the signs before they attempt to pass under bridges.
