A pet cemetery, the first to be sited in the Wyre Forest district, could be created on land off Habberley Road, Bewdley.

It would offer plots for pets from "a goldfish to an elephant" if given the go-ahead.

A survey is to be carried out to ensure the proposed cemetery would not lead to the disturbance of rare plants or animals as the site is close to the Habberley Valley. MCF Investments, of New Road, Kidderminster, has applied to Wyre Forest District Council for a change of use for the land with access and car parking.

The developers have said there would not be any incineration facilities on the greenfield site and that no structures would be erected.

The application is believed to be the first of its kind in the Wyre Forest district although pet cemeteries have already opened at Ombersley, near Kidderminster, in the Wychavon District, and in Stourbridge.

Agent Steven Greybanks said: "The developers are a husband and wife team who had recently lost a pet.

"They have had this land which is in the Green Belt for some time and decided this would be an ideal use.

"Owners of anything from a goldfish to an elephant would be able to use the cemetery which will cover about a two-acre plot."

Wyre Forest Council's planning development control committee is expected to make a decision at a meeting on May 14.
