Sita UK is said to be shutting its site in Neachells Lane, Wednesfield, Wolverhampton, on May 1 as it is 'no longer viable'.

A second tip run by the company at Coneygre Industrial Estate in Tipton is also set to close but no date has been given.

Union officials say they are considering taking legal action over the decision.

The sites are commercial rubbish tips and recycling centres, collecting and sorting bottle banks in the Black Country.

All operations will be moved to Bordesley in Birmingham to save money but staff will be relocated of possible.

Caroline Crolley, Unite regional officer, said "We are extremely disappointed. The company has not consulted with us or helped us by giving any information to our members. The staff are devastated and unsure about their futures.

"Staff made it clear the site in Wednesfield was viable but bosses had made their decision from the outset and were not willing to listen to any suggestions we had."
