The smash happened on Newhampton Road West, Whitmore Reans, around 7.20pm last night, writing off the blue Corsa which was parked outside its owner Diane Hyde's house. The shocked 60-year-old said: "I heard a large thud – it sounded like a bomb had gone off."

The force of the impact caused the Corsa to mount the pavement, knock through the perimeter wall of the house next door and end up embedded in the 4ft high wall outside the house next door but one.

Mrs Hyde, who works at West Park Hospital as a store supply co-ordinator and lives with her 60-year-old salesman husband Adrian, added: "I am really upset as I have had this car for around four years."

Police spokeswoman Zoe Lee said that a man was taken to hospital and was later discharged.
