The body of the 61-year-old man, named locally as John Wright, was found at the back of the large detached house in Scholar's Gate, Burntwood, early yesterday morning.

A woman was arrested on suspicion of what police described as a "domestic murder". Detectives today confirmed she had been released without charge.

The death is now being treated as unexplained.

Neighbours living in the quiet cul-de-sac off Church Road said the woman, named as Ellen Wright, was a retired headmistress also aged in her early 60s.

Mr and Mrs Wright, who were described as a "lovely couple", are thought to have lived in Scholar's Gate for more than 16 years. Neighbours, who asked not to be named, said: "We are just so, so shocked. They are friends of ours and it is terrible."

Stephanie Stanley, of Scholar's Gate, said: "At first we thought there had been a break-in or something. You never get anything like this around here."

Ambulance spokesman Chris Kowalik said paramedics were called out at 0.14am and an ambulance and rapid response vehicle had attended. He declined to reveal any further details.
