The shadow chancellor met with management and workers at the Jaguar Land Rover plant at Castle Bromwich 24 hours after staff agreed tough moves to save their jobs.

They accepted a shorter working week and a pay freeze to prevent further redundancies after the loss of 1,800 jobs.

Mr Osborne moved on to central Birmingham and told the city's Chamber of Commerce that Britain must move away from an economy built on debt and return to one built on hard work and saving, declaring: "The money-for-nothing society has to end."

This afternoon, he was due to meet members of the Black Country Chamber of Commerce in Bilston.
