Donald Moss, aged 82, of Groveland Road, Tipton, was a regular at the Malt Shovel, in Tower Street, Dudley, where he was described today as "part of the family".

He died after being knocked down by a cement lorry at 8.15am on Tuesday at the junction of Dudley Port and Sedgley Road East. Pub licensees Maxine Hollins and her boyfriend Paul Delargey, both 47, of the Malt Shovel pub, said they were in shock.

Mr Delargey said: "He used the pub six days a week during the seven years we have owned the Malt Shovel, and probably even before that. He was part and parcel of the pub's family and was one of the regulars."

Miss Hollins said: "Everybody knew him, from the young to the old – he had his own chair in the corner. It was just such a shock to hear what had happened. They called him 'the old boy'. His death has just left us feeling dumbfounded and upset."

Civil servant Julie Clee, 70, lived next door to Mr Moss for more than 15 years. "I was devastated when I heard the news," she said. "Everybody around here is really upset because he was such a lovely man."
