Three dead in two days of road hell

Three people were killed during a grim weekend on the region's roads which saw a woman arrested on suspicion of causing the death of a Wolverhampton pensioner by dangerous driving.

The death toll included cyclists in Wolverhampton and Worcestershire and a 25-year-old woman who crashed into traffic lights while driving in West Bromwich.

The woman was confirmed dead at the scene after losing control of her Rover 200, which flipped on to its side in the early hours of yesterday.

Police shut off the road at the junction of Great Bridge Street and Dudley Street until 4am.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said: "There was a loud bang at around 12.20am and I got up to look out the window.

"There were flashing lights everywhere and everyone along the road went to see what had happened. It was awful."

A male passenger, in his 20s was treated for shock and taken to Sandwell General Hospital.

Flowers and tributes have been left at roadside. One note reads: "RIP my beautiful Sam."

Crew commander Darren Kendal, from Tipton fire station, said: "We found the car on its side. It had collided with a lamp post and flipped.

"Paramedics had already pronounced one woman dead and there was a gentleman at the side of the road who was being treated."

In Wednesfield, a 38-year-old woman was arrested and bailed by police on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after an accident killed an 81-year-old man.

He came off his bicycle after colliding with a Renault Scenic in Neachells Lane at its junction with March End Road, at 12.45pm on Saturday.

A cyclist died after his bike left the road at a junction of the A443 in Great Witley, near Stourport at 12.15pm yesterday.

An ambulance, a community first responder and the County Air Ambulance were sent to the scene.
