West Mercia Police launched a murder hunt and have arrested seven people in connection with the attack.

It is thought the victim, believed to be a 19-year-old, was stabbed twice through the heart in the attack on Hartlebury Common at 5.30pm yesterday.

The woman, thought to be the dead man's mother, was fighting for her life in hospital today after suffering head and neck injuries.

A post-mortem is due to be carried out on the victim's body, police confirmed.

A worker at nearby Wigley DIY on Sandy Lane Industrial Estate said staff had heard a "young lad" and his parents had been attacked yesterday evening.

"It was a complete shock when I heard what had happened," she said. "A young boy has been stabbed and his parents attacked – it is not something you would expect round here.

"I live nearby and I heard the helicopters flying overhead in the early evening. The island coming off the Worcester Road was sealed off last night but the tape had been removed this morning.

"I knew something had happened but I just heard this morning that someone had been killed, a young lad was stabbed."

Hartlebury Common, a nature reserve, is sited opposite a large caravan park near the former power station off Worcester Road.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the attack. Anyone with information is asked to call West Mercia Police on 0300 333 3000. Alternatively call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The seven people arrested were still helping officers with their inquiries this morning.
