Spokeswoman Helen Chivers said: "There's another band of rain, sleet and snow moving north from France and I would think it would be reaching the West Midlands in the early hours of the morning, towards 6am for the rush hour.

"I would think we could be looking at between one and two inches. During the day it will turn a bit sleety and become a mixture of sleet and snow throughout the day.

"Temperatures will get up to about 2C (36F)."

She said temperatures would remain below normal for the time of year for the rest of the month, but it was too early to say if there would be more snowfall later in the month.

She predicted sunshine for today in the West Midlands region.

"As we go into this evening there will be a frost and the mixture of sleet and snow going into Friday," she added.
