But it was Peter Holmes' own time to shine yesterday, after he was honoured with an MBE.

Wolverhampton sports promoter Peter Holmes travelled to Buckingham Palace to receive the honour from the Prince of Wales. The 76-year-old former swimmer from Whitmore Reans has dedicated decades of his life to a range of organisations, clubs and institutions promoting sport.

"Sport has been my life," he said. "All that I wanted to do was make sure that young people got the opportunity to take part in sport because I think in a lot of cases young people are getting a raw deal today."

The father-of-two, who lives in Glentworth Gardens, has sat on Sport England.

And he is also a founding member of the Wolverhampton Sporting Hall of Fame.
