Mr Obama captured the key battleground states of Pennsylvania and Ohio, before breaking through the winning threshold of 270 electoral college votes at 4am, when projections showed he had also taken California and a slew of other states.

Then came the news that he had also seized Florida, Virginia and Colorado - all of which voted Republican in 2004 - turning swathes of the map from red to blue.

However, the popular vote remains close. Latest figures show Obama on 51.3 per cent against 47.4 per cent for Arizona Senator John McCain.

Now we want you to tell us what it means to you - will the arrival of an African American in The White House change the world? Will the result mean changes to the political landscape in this country? Does what happens in America actually matter to the people of this country?
