Organisers of Walsall Illuminations are hoping it will be alright on the night when they test the lights for the first time today.

Engineers will have their fingers crossed when the switches are flicked at the town's Arboretum as dark falls this evening.

Around 50 workers have spent six weeks assembling the show, which has more than 250 light features.

More than 30 miles of cable have been installed, along with thousands of light bulbs ready for the launch night on Friday, when gates open at 7pm.

Councillor Louise Harrison, Walsall Council's leisure boss, said she did not anticipate any hitches.

"We're getting so close now I really can't wait for it to start," she said.

"I can't wait to see the faces on the first families that come into the Arboretum and see what we have in store. It's really exciting."

Noddy and Peppa Pig will appear in the entertainment marquee at the heart of the venue, while the opening weekend this week will see Dora the Explorer leave the Spooky Forest behind to come to the Black Country.

On October 4, Noddy will say goodbye to Toyland and hello to everyone in Walsall while Peppa Pig will take centre stage on October 11.

Tickets are on sale now. Advance bookings will be cheaper and tickets can be used on any illuminations dates. Prices start at £4. Visit www.walsall-lights. com or call 0845 1112909.
