The first part of a major £3 million regeneration of a Staffordshire town – bringing 200 jobs – is now under way at the former Lucas factory.
Light Works, at Market Street, in Hednesford, will consist of a restaurant, 12 shops, a museum/cafe themed on the history of the area and of Lucas Industries, and 20 apartments and duplex lofts. The shops and homes will be available to let and details are currently being prepared. The shopping complex will feature an art deco glass front.
All of the legal work has been completed, paving the way for construction work to start "in earnest".
Pritchard Group PLC operatives have already been preparing the Lucas building for its demolition.
This is the first project to start on site in Hednesford in what is hoped to be the start of the wholesale regeneration of the town, with other projects set to follow.
Fred Pritchard, chairman and chief executive officer of Pritchard Group PLC, said: "Preparations had started with essential repairs and remedial work.
"But it is only now we were able to start in earnest, with a view to completing the shops, and as many apartments/lofts as possible prior to Christmas this year," he continued.
"All of the hard work that has been put into this project and the length of time it has taken to get it to this point is a testimony to the public and private sectors working together to achieve benefit for the community," he added.
"This development is in a premium location in Hednesford and strong benefits will ensue for the community. It will be a benefit to all," said the chairman.
Councillor Danny Davies said: "Town centre redevelopment schemes are complex projects to deliver.
"It is pleasing to see the patience of Hednesford shoppers rewarded with this start on what will be the first of a number of regeneration schemes designed to re-invigorate the town centre."
