Alfie Wolstencroft, of Halesowen, endured three and a half years of gruelling chemotherapy treatments and hospital visits.

But the Howley Grange pupil has now been given the all clear after a bone marrow test showed the cancer had completely disappeared.

His mother Kate, aged 36, of Bourne Avenue, said: "It is absolutely fantastic – it is as good as it gets. We just can't believe it.

"They did a bone marrow test at the hospital and it came back clear. It was a great feeling after such a traumatic three-and-a-half years."

Alfie is now enjoying the same hobbies as any other five-year-old, including swimming lessons, gym class and riding his bike.

The cheeky youngster also enjoyed a family camping trip to Cornwall with his mother, father Steve, 40, nine-year-old brother Jack and seven-year-old sister Maisie.

Mrs Wolstencroft said: "He has been really brave throughout everything. I don't know if I could have been as brave as him."

Alfie suffered bouts of colds and coughs but it was not until he developed spots on his body his parents realised something was seriously wrong and he was later diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia.

He will continue to have a blood test once a month as well as regular check ups for the rest of his life so doctors can keep a close eye on his health.

Mrs Wolstencroft said they were grateful for all of the support they had received from both family members and well-wishers during Alfie's illness.

Fundraisers helped to raise thousands of pounds to send Alfie and his family on dream trips to Disneyland and Lapland to give them a well-earned break while he was undergoing treatment.
