Andrew McGregor, pictured, admitted perverting the course of justice by going along with a lie concocted by his girlfriend Victoria Dobson, the boy's mother. She said the youngster was the victim of a hit-and-run-driver.

Th 30-year-old also pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and driving with no insurance.

Dobson, of Poole Crescent, Coseley, who admitted perverting the course of justice, escaped a jail sentence after Judge Michael Dudley said she had "suffered greatly" already. The 23-year-old was instead given a six-month sentence suspended for two years.

The couple deceived police for 14 hours over the death of 21-month-old Sean, who was knocked down in the driveway of Dobson's home.

Wolverhampton Crown Court heard that McGregor, of Willis Pearson Avenue, had gone out for tobacco on the evening of September 21 in his van thinking that Sean was inside the house.

He told police in interview: "I thought Sean was inside. I reversed off the drive and never heard a bump but as I drove off I saw him in the mirror."
