A bogus policeman attacked an 80-year-old woman, leaving her with cuts and bruises, after tricking his way into her Wolverhampton home.
Today police released a grainy CCTV image of the attacker, who was wearing a distinctive red baseball cap. The robber made off with cash and items from the property on Park Road West, close to the city's West Park. He carried out a search and attacked the woman after she became suspicious.
Detectives were today appealing for people to identify the robber before he strikes again in the city.
West Midlands Police spokeswoman Sarah Astbury said today: "This is a serious incident, we are investigating it and we would urge anyone with any information about this to come forward."
The attack happened on Tuesday afternoon but details were only released today as the CCTV image was released.
Officers hope the robber's red cap may identify the man, who was white, in his 20s and around 5ft 9in to 5ft 11in tall.
It is the latest violent attack in the region from robbers who talk their way into the homes of vulnerable people.
In March an elderly woman from Great Wyrley was duped by a man claiming to be from a water company who stole cash. During the same month two bogus water workers stole cash and a bank book from a pensioner in Stafford.
West Midlands Police are urging householders to put a chain on their door which they can use to open it slightly.
Residents should ask to see a caller's identity card and if they have any suspicions at all they shouldn't let them into the property and, if needs be, should call 999.
Anyone with information relating to the crime on Park Road West, or the man pictured is urged to contact CID at Bilston Street police station on 0845 113 5000 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
