Body found in canalA pensioner's body was pulled out of a Walsall canal early today, along a stretch popular with dog walkers.

Residents whose homes overlook the Wyrley & Essington Canal near the junction with Chester Road and Lindon Road, in Brownhills, said the first they knew of the tragedy was when they saw police officers arrive at the scene.

The woman was discovered near the Anchor Bridge which carries Chester Road.

Peoples using the towpath, which is popular with dog walkers and families, were diverted after officers sealed off a short section of the path.

A small team of uniformed officers were also standing guard at the scene.

Lindon Road resident Beryl Capewell said: "The police came into the street at about 8am. Then we heard that a body had been found. We've got no idea who it might be."

West Midlands Police spokeswoman Catherine Preece said: "The body of an elderly woman was recovered from the canal. A post mortem will take place but the death is not thought to be suspicious at this stage."

Black Country coroner Robin Balmain has been informed.
