The project is scheduled to last between 16 and 18 weeks, but the library at Sankeys Corner will remain open to the public for the majority of that period.

Health and safety guidelines mean the library will have to close during the final two to three weeks of work.

This is in order to protect staff and customers as flat parts of the roof are re-felted.

Much of the library's stock will also need to go into storage while work is in progress, but it is hoped a mobile service close to the library will be provided throughout the final stages.

Lorraine Riley, joint district manager for Lichfield District Libraries, said: "We are hopeful that the re-roofing will proceed on time and lead to a long-term solution for securing the maintenance of the roof on what is an extremely attractive and distinctive building.

"There will undoubtedly be some inconvenience to our customers, for which we can only apologise in advance.

"But we aim to continue to operate a library service in some form throughout this period. We hope that everyone who uses Burntwood Library will bear with staff during the work. Staff will keep customers informed on the progress of the work and the plans for delivering a library service while the building is closed."

The normal opening times for the library vary throughout the week.

They are: Monday, 9am to 5pm; Tuesday, 9am to 7pm; Wednesday, 9am to 5pm; Thursday, 9am to 1pm; Friday, 9am to 7pm; and Saturday, 9.30am to 4pm.

The library is closed on Sundays.
