Fury over city market's demise
I would like to voice my feelings on the deliberate destruction of our Wolverhampton market by the town council.
I would like to voice my feelings on the deliberate destruction of our Wolverhampton market by the town council.
I shop there every week, and have done for the past 30 years, I have seen the demise of the market at first hand.
The stall holders have dwindled to nothing due to the high rents and the lack of encouragement of the local council to get people to go to that part of the town. Soon there will be nothing left for the people of Wolverhampton to go to.
The council has moved the market further and further out of the town and are now saying that there is no space for the market in the town centre.
May I make a suggestion? The council should consider moving the market back to its original place to the heart of the town.
The civic centre area would be ideal, there appears to be little or no activity in the offices on the ground floor of this building and would make an ideal location for the inside market, and the forecourt of the building for the outside market, with temporary stalls erected every market day.
The activity that is currently being handled at the civic centre can then be incorporated into the new development on Snow Hill.
The council see fit to allow the German market each year to use Dudley Street why not support its own loyal market traders and welcome them back into the heart of the town. Maybe Wolverhampton Council should look at its neighbours i.e. Bilston and West Bromwich, the transport links buses and trams take potential shoppers straight to the market place, if the council moved our market back into the town, Wolverhampton would have the same advantage, this would then encourage more out of town shoppers to visit.
Let common sense prevail and stop alienating our market traders that are still loyal to the town.
