Officer threw cigarette on floor

I read with interest your article about a young woman in Darlaston who has just been fined £500 for dropping a cigarette butt on the floor.

I understand that dropping fag butts all over the floor is a nuisance and I agree that something needs to be done, but £500 is a bit over the top. This story stayed in my mind because I am an ex-smoker and used to live in Darlaston.

Imagine my surprise when a few days later I was looking out of my kitchen window and noticed a car (unmarked) parked in one of our parking bays (we live in a cul-de-sac) that I had not seen before and on further inspection I noticed that the gentleman driver was a police officer, in full uniform.

He was sat in the driver's seat with his feet out of the car enjoying a cigarette (I thought it was now against the law to smoke in company vehicles.) To my shock and horror he then proceeded to put his cigarette out by throwing it on the floor and crushing it with his foot.

I am contemplating ringing Crimestoppers to report this incident. However, as he was in full uniform I have no doubt that the "one rule for them and one rule for us" policy would apply. A word of advice, stop smoking it clearly affects your wealth – uniformed officers excused.
