An estimated 800,000 British people own houses and apartments in Spain and many are worried about losing their homes.
They have invested their savings in second homes and retirement villas after being assured by builders they came with valid building licences - the Spanish version of planning permission.
But now they have been told the homes that have been erected are in breach of zoning regulations and must be demolished.
The central-government inspired crackdown could force homes to be bulldozed along the 1,000-mile Mediterranean coastline.
