Call for Fryers to quit council

Politicians in Lichfield are calling for the city's disgraced former mayor to resign as a councillor.

Councillor Mike Fryers has already quit as first citizen after being convicted of common assault.

Opposition and independent district councillors say he has lost the respect of the people and should consider stepping down from his post altogether.

But he will not automatically face disciplinary action from the district council.

Councillor Fryers was found guilty on Monday at Tamworth Magistrates Court of assaulting a reveller during a booze-fuelled pub brawl.

He had denied taking part in the confrontation at the King's Head pub in the early hours of July 14 but at his trial magistrates were told Fryers, Conservative councillor for the Chadsmead ward, leapt from his seat and lunged at Peter Cole following a dispute.

Magistrates gave Councillor Fryers a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £455 court costs and £75 compensation.

Independent councillor John Walker, who represents the Curborough ward, said: "Of course he should go. He has stepped down as first citizen of the city so how can he not step down as councillor?
