Members of Lichfield Society of Artists will come under the spotlight at the autumn exhibition, which will be officially opened by the city's MP Michael Fabricant in the Gallery of Lichfield Library.

Around 40 artists will be exhibiting one or two pieces in the exhibition – which will house more than 100 exhibits – with several awards up for grabs. Mr Fabricant will also choose an artist to receive the Michael Fabricant Award.

The exhibition is one of two major events on the Lichfield Society of Artists calendar – the other being its spring exhibition.

And it is open to visitors for several weeks after the launch, which is by invite only.

Jan Leytham-Gain, the society's treasurer, said all the artists' works had now been handed in and judges are now going through works to pick those deserving an award. Mr Fabricant will pick his at the launch.

"We also have commendations for those who have done really, really well," said Jan. "There is one for each medium.

"I would encourage people to go along and see the exhibition. It is not only for people who are accomplished artists.

"We need to keep encouraging visual arts in the city."

Jan said this year the Society is also trying to change the kind of sponsorship it gets for the awards.

"We are trying to encourage local businesses to come along and support the society instead of national businesses."

The mediums featured in the exhibition include oil, wood, colour, mixed media and pastel work, sculptures and craft work.

The society was formed in 1945 by a group of artists to promote and encourage visual arts in and around Lichfield.

Around 230 people are on its books, and, as well as the two exhibitions, work is continually on show in the bar of the Lichfield Garrick Theatre.

The society hosts demonstrations on the second Wednesday of every month, and workshops on the fourth.

Local businesses interested in sponsoring the awards should call Jan on 07932 602446.
