A man has been killed in a car crash near the village of Swinfen, near Lichfield, on the A38.

The 30-year-old's Vauxhall Vectra car is believed to have crashed into a tree at around 9.30pm yesterday.

The crash happened on the southbound carriageway between Weeford and Bassett's Pole.

The victim, who has not yet been identified, was driving in the direction of Bassett's Pole when the car is thought to have overturned.

Rescuers cut the driver free from the wreckage of his car but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A rapid response vehicle and an emergency doctor from Staffordshire as well as a West Midlands ambulance responded to the crash.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "The initial reports suggested a single car had overturned on the dual carriageway and the driver was trapped.

"Crews were quickly on the scene but unfortunately it was not possible to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene by the doctor."

Police today appealed for witnesses to the crash to come forward and urged anyone who may have seen the white Vectra before the accident to contact them.

The accident is being investigated by Pc Phil Goode on 08453 302010.
