Red-faced highways chiefs were again apologising today for yet another delay in opening the new £25 million Rugeley bypass.

Frustrated motorists are still not allowed to travel on the road - despite assurances yesterday that it would be open today.

Staffordshire County Council says "major electrical problems" are to blame with lights not working at the main Station Road roundabout.

The road, which was officially opened in a blaze of glory on Saturday, was due to open to traffic by Tuesday but a delayed independent inspection meant it was pushed back until today. However, Jeremy Herbert, spokesman for Staffordshire Highways, says traffic still cannot use the road due to problems with the electrical supply. He said electrical provider Central Networks are trying to resolve the situation.

He said: "We are very disappointed and are doing everything we can to sort it. It is an eagerly awaited road and we don't want to disappoint people, but it needs to be safe."

Mr Herbert said he could not guarantee when the road would be open as they are relying on Central Networks to get the work done.

Hundreds of people lined the route of the new bypass on Saturday afternoon for the official opening. A vehicle cavalcade including classic cars, lorries, buses, scooters, bikes and a horse and carriage paraded along the new carriageway.

The new road has been created to ease congestion in Rugeley - a major through route for heavy goods vehicles and commuters.
