Raise taxes on alcohol

The aftermath of a Bank Holiday weekend is the streets strewn with beer bottles and cans attributable, largely, to the cheapness of alcohol, to the extent that some retailers are selling it at less than cost.

Surely, the answer is for the government to impose a massive tax on alcohol except for that consumed on licenced premises. This would not penalise or lead to the further demise of public houses where alcohol consumption can be monitored by publicans.

Instead, irresponsible consumption would be cured by prohibitive means and the tax income diverted to local authorities for them to spend on community police officers, litter wardens and litter clearance.
