Former mayor dies, aged 90

A former Wolverhampton mayor, magistrate and leading fundraiser has died aged 90.

Vic Law, whose real name was Francis, lost his battle against cancer on Sunday.

Mr Law dedicated his life to serving the public, including setting up Wolverhampton Sunday Football League.

After leaving the Army in 1946, Mr Law became a lifelong member of the Labour Party, serving on Wednesfield Town Council from 1952 to 1974.

He was also mayor of Wolverhampton from 1971 to 1972.

From 1954 to 1983 he was a magistrate. He was president of Wednesfield Rotary Club from 1978 to 1979 and a co-founder of Wednesfield Housing Association. He attended three Royal garden parties at Buckingham Palace for his outstanding contribution to the public.

Mr Law was married to Iris for 65 years before she died in 2005. They lived in Tettenhall.

He leaves one daughter and one son, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

David Johns, secretary of Wednesfield Rotary Club, said today: "He was very proud of all that he had achieved in his life and particularly his family."

His private funeral service will be attended by family only.
