Carl Wiley, aged 31, brought a chunk of concrete crashing down onto a gunman's head after he was shot at near the Wulfrun Centre.

He was in one of two rival gangs who clashed near Netto.

Gary Williams sparked the violence when he spotted rival gang member Isaac Frazer on a pathway near the Wulfrun Centre.

Williams tried to shoot Frazer but the gun exploded in his face and the men fled.

Frazer phoned for re-enforcements and spotted Williams, who had been joined by associate Wiley, in Temple Street around 20 minutes later.

Frazer opened fire on Williams and Wiley twice in shocking scenes which were caught on CCTV. But when Frazer's gun jammed, Williams and Wiley ran after his gang and attacked them on a pedestrian crossing.

Wiley picked up a lump of concrete and smashed it onto the head of Jamie Wint, who was one of Frazer's re-enforcements and who also had a gun.

Wiley, of Windsor Road, Parkfields, denied being the man on the footage of last June's violence.

But a Pc recognised him from the images and he was convicted at a trial in May this year of violent disorder and wounding Wint.

Sentencing at Birmingham Crown Court yesterday, Judge Frank Chapman said Wiley had narrowly avoided an indefinite jail sentence.
