Celebrate Britain's favourite

I would like to reply to your negative article about fish and chip prices (July 10). Can I just remind everyone that fish and chips is still Britain's favourite takeaway.

Published

It is the healthiest takeaway meal and highly nutritious, containing less fat and fewer calories per 100g than most takeaway meals.

At Our Plaice, fish and chips are still prepared from natural products – potatoes that are peeled fresh every day and fish that is still filleted every morning on site. There are no additives, no salts – only that which a customer may request along with their vinegar.

Yes, it is reported that potato prices are going up along with fish prices, but you are dealing with seasonal and environmental factors that effect these products. Weather affects the crops and the ongoing fish issues that are being addressed globally. All the fish we sell is sustainable fish caught in sustainable waters and fully traceable. Fish and chips at Our Plaice are £4.50, and most shops have carried the increase in costs without passing it on to the customer.

Have you compared this with other takeaway prices? With fish and chips you get a substantial and highly nutritious meal full of flavour. Cooked correctly, the fish is poached in the batter.

There are only three ingredients in fish and chips – potatoes, fish and the batter it is cooked in.

When you go for an Indian, Chinese or pizza meal you can't get much for £4.50!

It is time we raised the profile of our national dish and gave it the credit it deserves. Why is fish and chips continually given such bad press? We should be celebrating the British fish and chip meal and praising its qualities.

Here's to our heritage – the great British meal of fish and chips.
