Driver held on bus death
The driver of a single-decker involved in a fatal collision at Walsall Bus Station was today arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving.
The 61-year-old man has been taken into police custody following the crash which left a Bentley woman dead and six people injured on Monday.
Pedestrian Jean Crump suffered multiple injuries after being knocked down by the 360 Arriva Service.
The 65-year-old, of Lime Avenue, was airlifted by helicopter to Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham but died the same day.
Police were this afternoon quizzing the Arriva Midlands driver, who is from Cannock and based at the firm's depot in Bridgtown, over the tragedy along with other witnesses.
Keith Myatt, spokesman for bus company, said it was working alongside police to find out what went wrong.
Experts from the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA), part of the Department for Transport, have been called in to inspect the bus.
The bus hit two pedestrians, a shelter, two cars and a van before hitting the 51 Travel West Midlands service bound for Birmingham. It finished up heading in the wrong direction in St Paul's Street.
West Midlands Police spokeswoman Zoe Coward said: "A 61-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is currently in police custody. Inquiries continue."
Mrs Crump's inquest was opened yesterday by Black Country coroner Robin Balmain.
He said a pathology report had given the cause of death as "fatal external and internal injuries relating to the accident".
