More floods on way in downpour

Three flood warnings were issued for the Midlands today as the nation braced itself for more lashings of rain.

Met Office bosses have issued a severe weather warning for nearly all of England and Wales, forecasting rainfall of up to two inches in some areas.The Environment Agency has put out 37 flood warnings.

The unseasonal weather has caused havoc across the region over the past two weeks, with the clean-up operation nationwide expected to cost more than £1billion.

A flood support centre was today set up in Worcester to co-ordinate fire and rescue resources nationwide as two warnings were issued for the River Severn and another for the River Trent in Staffordshire.

The move follows complaints about confusion among the emergency services after police, ambulance crews and the fire service were inundated with hundreds of calls in the spate of just three hours earlier this week.

The Highways Agency also issued a warning, asking drivers to take extra care on the roads this weekend as many roads are expected to flood.

Some businesses in Stafford, including the Picture House Pub and Riverside Recreational Centre, remain closed due to flood damage.

Forecaster Tori Lacey said the outlook for next week remained wet.
