Hospital pregnancy tests scare
Pregnant women in Wolverhampton could have wrongly been given the all-clear following the discovery of a faulty batch of test kits, hospital bosses warned today.
New Cross Hospital has carried out 800 pregnancy tests since March 25 using potentially unreliable equipment.
Manufacturers Unipath produced 83,000 Clearview HCG test kits which are sold only to hospitals. Phil Milligan, chief operating officer at New Cross, said today: "We were alerted to the issue on Tuesday and we set up a helpline immediately."
Mr Milligan said no-one who visited New Cross had yet been identified as a victim of a faulty test.
The hospital has since replaced all the kits from the batch. It is drawing up a list of women who could possibly be affected.
Unipath spokeswoman Lesley Foster said 44 Clearview HCG pregnancy test kits in the batch of 83,000 were unreliable.
Clearview HCG is not available in shops.
Any patients who have had a pregnancy test at New Cross since March 25 and have concerns should contact the hospital helpline on 01902 695100.
