Global warming: what are we doing about it?

I was intrigued by a recent TV news item showing how Frieburg in Germany was one of the most energy efficient towns in Europe, if not in the world.

Solar panels were everywhere, resulting in a huge saving in energy.

Trams were running up and down the main wide boulevard and cars seemed few and far between, maybe tucked away in a hidden car park.

According to statistics, Lichfield is well down the pecking order when it comes to being energy efficient, in stark contrast to its record of recycling, which is very good.

Local councils can set an example in energy efficiency, and steps are on the way to put their own houses in order.

Then initiatives need to be put in place to encourage developers in new build and individuals in existing dwellings to install energy producing devices such as solar panels, combined heat and power units etc.

I am hoping that soon Lichfield District Council, of which I am a member and of the Liberal Democrat group, will be coming up with a plan for the future to meet the challenge of climate change.

Cllr Derek Love, St Chad's Road, Lichfield.
